A slowly rounding peg

While building a installation piece I had an idea to turn it into a short film. This is in no way supposed to be an "animation". My original vision was more a comic book panel look with transitions (wipes) denoting speed of movement or intent. For best viewing, try a big screen at 720p or higher (4k is best) with the sound right up. At the moment I have no plans to do any more video or digital work but I didn't have plans to do this either so for the moment, we'll see. Thanks for taking a look. Please feel free to offer comments or suggestions. It's been a long time since I've done anything like this so it has certainly been a learning experience. I should have the pictures of the original sculpture up very soon. This is the first work from the "Between Worlds" series. More soon.

La plus belle des ruses du diable est de vous persuader qu'il n'existe pas. ― Charles Baudelaire

My little side project The Museum of Cryptozoology and Occult Science is excited to be included in the up-coming "Bump in the Night" Exhibition at The Old Auction House in Kyneton over the Halloween period. We have some exciting new projects for the show, the first of which the Dybbuk box was finished up this week. More details about this will be popping up on the MOCAOS blog soon but for now and until the show, please enjoy a small preview

Phra Khru Samathakittikhun

This blurb is taken from a sign at the shrine of Phra Khru Samathakittikhun outside the Buddhist temple. Slight corrections have been made but I think this is the gist-

PHRA KHRU SAMATHAKITTIKHUN (Dang Piyasilo)
1894-1973

This is the undecomposed remains of Phra Khru Samathakittikhun (Dang Piyasilo) the venerable ex-abbot of Wat Kunaram on Koh Samui. He enjoyed a prosperous family life until he was 50 years old when he decided to devote the latter part of his life in the Monk-hood.

After being ordained in 1944, his Meditation Practice became renowned and his followers were many among Buddhist Monks and Laymen alike. He was also known for his ability to foresee his own death, which happened in 1973, he was 79 years old.

After his death his body remained incorruptible so with his written permission, his relatives and disciples placed him in an upright position within his casket He remains as a symbol to inspire future generations to follow Buddha, study his teachings and be saved from suffering.

Ulysses Davis

Get Off My Back

Ulysses Davis was a Barber who's shop was home to hundreds of his wooden sculptures. When asked if he sold them he replied “They’re my treasure. If I sold these, I’d be really poor.”

Strange Fruit

If you are interested in the late Mr Ulysses Davis I can highly recommend this book.

Ricky Leach

Untitled

There are not enough galleries in the world nor enough plane tickets to get to them all. This is one of the reasons I write so often about Artists I've stumbled across on the WWW. Ricky Leach has stopped me in my cyber tracks. Leach is a freelance concept artist whose clay creature work is stunning. Here's the thing. I talk about crossovers a bit on here but it is often hard to find good examples. Ricky's work stretches the boundaries of creature sculpting well into the realm of the white box so subtlety that both movie buffs and art lovers heads could well explode.

Untitled

As if the fine skin textures and obvious skeletal and fibrous tissue frame work is not enough, Leach removes and manipulates ever so slightly, holding dear to original form while breathing life or substance, shadow or mass to dreams, wishes and the quantum like so very few can.

The healer

The Healer seems to be a project that Ricky has just finished up. A stunning piece that sits very comfortably between the new age, eastern tradition and 1970s psychedelic and early 80s sci-fi. In one easy trip Leach has bridged, gathered and harvested with all the skill of a Greek philosopher and posed his pile like Kubrick squares a frame. Stick a fork in me.

Untitled

My job here is done. I have no words for Leach's work. This has been and always will be a futile attempt. Describing love is gallant no doubt but can never hold a candle to the feeling. I'm sure Mr Leach has a cornucopia of gestures ready in waiting. You can check out Ricky Leach on deviantart or his Facebook here.

The mystery of Shain Erin

Not a month goes by without the mysterious Shain Erin's work popping up somewhere on the internets. It's only now though, three years after any sign of activity, that the mystery is beginning to peak. Whispers, suspicion, fear, rumour. Who and where? Is there more work? Why no word? Erin is missed and the quality of his work only makes the loss even more potent.
